Possibly a stupid question?

That's not a dumb question at all. Luckily I've got an answer for you.

There's no need to shave for the new, thicker hairs to come in. Beard hair is similar to the hair on your head in the same way that both shed. The old (thinner) hair falls out, which gives room for new (thicker) hair to grow in its place. This doesn't happen all at once, so you won't see any patches of hair missing. Like most things with hair, if you give it time it'll get longer/denser/fuller.

    Cheers, and keep on growing!

some of us use conditioners to get that soft beard. My wife much prefers my beard soft.

so enjoy and yes it probably will get thicker with time.
